## What Ranklist is

Ranklist is a site where people settle arguments about which of two things is better. A visitor sees two items from a list, picks one, and then sees how everyone else voted on that same pair. People can also rank a whole list in order. Every number on the site comes from votes people cast. Fight results are plain counts. List positions are a smoothed points score, described on the methodology page. Nothing is an editorial score, there is no paid placement and no weighting by who voted.

## How a number is made

- One vote per device per pair per day.
- A percentage is only shown once a pair has 5 or more votes and is settled: someone wrote a reason, or it has 10 or more picks. Otherwise only the count is shown.
- The vote count is always printed next to a percentage, so the denominator is never hidden.
- "Ahead" means more votes. An equal split is reported as even; no winner is invented.
- A vote on a pair is one of two things. A pick is a tap on a fight page. A ranking of the list, submitted by one person, puts one item above the other on each pair of items it includes, and counts once on each of those pairs. Rankings are often partial, so a pair can have fewer people behind it than its list. On the site the two kinds are counted together and named apart: "6 picks" and "6 people who ranked both" are never the same claim. A count of people is people, never the number of pairs their rankings cover.
- Fight counts leave out votes from the site's own staff accounts and from browsers marked as the founder's.
- Full-list rankings are a separate calculation: a Borda count smoothed toward the list average. Fight votes do not move list rankings.

## Fights

Head-to-head pages. Each shows two items from the list; pick one and see how everyone else voted. Only lists with at least one pair at 5 or more votes are listed. On a pair, a vote is either a pick (a tap on a fight page) or one person's ranking of the list that includes both items and puts one above the other. Fight counts leave out accounts run by the site's staff.
