Funniest Standup Comedians of All Time

Baby Cobra (2016) was filmed late in Wong's first pregnancy, and she repeated the setup for Hard Knock Wife (2018) while carrying her second child. The pairing turned her into a Netflix headliner, and Beef later won her an Emmy for lead actress in a limited series.

A hostile crowd at a 2006 Opie and Anthony Traveling Virus date in Philadelphia drew a sustained counterattack that comics still trade around as a survival masterclass. The Monday Morning Podcast has run since 2007, and he co-created the animated series F Is for Family with Michael Price for Netflix.

Hicks built an act around consumer culture, censorship and psychedelics, and drew bigger crowds in Britain than at home. His October 1993 Late Show set was cut before broadcast, and CBS finally aired it in 2009, fifteen years after he died of pancreatic cancer at 32.

Bring the Pain (1996) won two Emmy Awards and reset what an HBO hour could carry politically. Rock hosted the Academy Awards in 2005 and again in 2016, and Selective Outrage (2023) became the first stand-up special Netflix streamed live worldwide.

Other comics point to Attell for pure joke density, firing off one-liners and crowd work at a rate that leaves almost no air in a set. Insomniac ran on Comedy Central from 2001 to 2004, and Skanks for the Memories remains the reference point for his club material.

Walking away from a reported $50 million Comedy Central deal in 2005 kept him off specials until Netflix released three of them in 2017, a run that won consecutive Grammys for Best Comedy Album. The Kennedy Center gave him the Mark Twain Prize in 2019, and Sticks & Stones took a Primetime Emmy the following year.

Stanhope co-hosted the final season of The Man Show with Joe Rogan, then spent two decades refusing anything resembling a career move. Deadbeat Hero (2004), Oslo: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere (2011) and Beer Hall Putsch (2013) document a drink-in-hand act built on nihilism and civil liberties.

Raw (1987) took in more than $50 million at the North American box office and still ranks as the highest-grossing stand-up concert film. Murphy was 19 when he joined Saturday Night Live in 1980, and the red leather suit he wore in Delirious (1983) became shorthand for 1980s stand-up swagger.

Carlin's Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television, from Class Clown (1972), got him arrested in Milwaukee that year, and a radio airing of a later version produced the 1978 Supreme Court ruling in FCC v. Pacifica. He hosted the first Saturday Night Live and made 14 HBO specials.

After I'm Telling You for the Last Time (1998), Seinfeld retired his entire act and rebuilt an hour from scratch, a process filmed for the documentary Comedian (2002). His observational material avoids politics and confession almost completely, which is rare among headliners at this level.

Gaffigan built a theater-filling career on clean material about food and parenting, with the Hot Pocket routine from Beyond the Pale (2006) as his calling card. His signature device is a whispered falsetto aside that heckles his own punchlines. He self-released Mr. Universe (2012) on his website for five dollars.

Mulaney wrote for Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2012, where he co-created Stefon, then built a stand-up career on tightly engineered storytelling. Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018) won a Primetime Emmy for writing, and Baby J (2023) rebuilt the act around his intervention and rehab.

The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1 (2006) made Williams an HBO headliner on delivery alone, a high, needling voice attached to relentless tangents. He won a Primetime Emmy in 2018 for his guest turn as Uncle Willy on Atlanta, and his 2024 Club Shay Shay interview drew millions of views within days.

What Now? (2016) was filmed at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia before a crowd of roughly 53,000, an arena-to-stadium jump few stand-ups have attempted. Laugh at My Pain (2011) and Let Me Explain (2013) built that audience through theatrical release rather than television.

A sleep disorder became the raw material for a one-man show, a book and a 2012 film, with Sleepwalk with Me taking an audience award at Sundance. Birbiglia has since brought The New One and The Old Man and the Pool to Broadway, working closer to theater than to club stand-up.

Working almost entirely in one-liners and non sequiturs, Hedberg performed from behind sunglasses with his eyes closed and his hair over his face. Strategic Grill Locations (1999) and Mitch All Together (2003) captured the style before his death in 2005 at 37.

Talking for Clapping (2016) won Oswalt both a Primetime Emmy for writing and a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. His act runs on dense pop-culture reference and long constructed similes, and Annihilation (2017) turned that machinery on the sudden death of his wife.

Pryor won five Grammy Awards and received the first Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 1998. Live in Concert (1979) set the template most modern specials still follow, and Live on the Sunset Strip (1982) led stand-up concert film grosses until Eddie Murphy Raw passed it in 1987.

Williams worked at a speed no peer matched, cycling through voices and characters faster than most comics get through a single premise. A Night at the Met (1986) and Live on Broadway (2002) bookend that manic style, and he hosted the first Comic Relief benefit with Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal in 1986.

Silverman's persona pairs a sunny, singsong delivery with material designed to detonate, a contrast she sharpened in Jesus Is Magic (2005). We Are Miracles (2013) won her a Primetime Emmy for writing, and The Sarah Silverman Program ran three seasons on Comedy Central.
