I did not expect a modern gun-fu classic to actually hold off the heavy hitters of the nineties, but as of July 2, 2026, John Wick has claimed the top spot on our [Top Action Movies](https://ranklist.io/list/top-action-movies) list. Based on 5 rankers, the community has put Keanu Reeves' puppy-avenging masterpiece right at the very peak, which is a bold choice when you look at the competition sitting just below it.
I was almost certain that Terminator 2: Judgment Day or The Matrix would run away with this. They are the twin pillars of sci-fi action, the movies that defined CGI and practical stunts for entire generations. Yet, Terminator 2 settled into fourth place, while The Matrix narrowly missed the runner-up spot, landing just behind Mad Max: Fury Road.
What surprised me is how Mad Max: Fury Road managed to edge out The Matrix for second place. Do not get me wrong, Fury Road is a relentless, two-hour heavy metal album cover of a movie, and it absolutely deserves the praise. I think its high placement comes down to pure kinetic energy. In a world of green screens, people still crave that real, dusty, gasoline-soaked practical filmmaking, and that is why it ranks higher than the digital reality of Neo and Trinity.
Then we have John Wick at number one. I have a theory on why this happened. The movie succeeded because it stripped away all the bloated lore that usually bogs down modern blockbusters. Beyond the spectacular judo and headshots, it gave us a simple, clean motivation, a beautiful dog, and ninety minutes of pure, unbroken momentum. It redefined action for the 2010s the same way The Matrix did for the late nineties.
Further down the list, we see some absolute legends sitting quietly in the bottom half. Predator, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and RoboCop are currently tied, waiting for more fans to jump in and shake things up. The fact that a masterpiece like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or the gritty realism of The Bourne Identity are sitting below the top five shows just how brutal this competition is. Even Casino Royale and The Dark Knight are languishing in the lower ranks for now.
I think The Dark Knight deserves to be much higher, but maybe voters are treating it more as a superhero drama than a pure action flick. If we are talking about car chases and fight choreography, it definitely has the chops to challenge the top four.
If you think John Wick is overrated, or if you cannot believe Terminator 2 is sitting down at fourth, you need to fix this. Head over to the [Top Action Movies](https://ranklist.io/list/top-action-movies) list and submit your own order. Disagree? Rank it yourself.
